Evolution Korea
The democratic system in South Korea is susceptible to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than might be expected.
The country is searching for a new way of developing. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is beginning to emerge.
Origins
In prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. The state extracted taxes from the citizens and often required them to serve in the army or take part in projects for the government like building fortifications.

The evolution of Korea
The Korean peninsula has been habitable since Neolithic times. Early evidence for human settlements is visible in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens, made of enormous single stones, are also widespread throughout the country.
In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognizable political state. The peninsula was later ruled by a number of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) which included Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern portion of the peninsula was occupied for a time by the Balhae Kingdom that historians do consider to be a genuine Korean state.
After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, or Several States Period. Of them, Baekje was the most powerful, but its dynasty ended with the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE leaving the southern provinces of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate in order to expand their territories. Silla with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.
As Korea enters a post-crisis phase its development model appears to be in flux. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old system are urging a thorough program of liberalization of capital as well as labor and product markets. On the other hand the people who support the old system try to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments and by stoking fears of job loss.
Analysts and academics are divided about the extent to which Korea's growth is influenced by these two trends. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also highlights the most important elements that are shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A 2009 survey showed that almost one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was insufficient evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier types of life.
In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and bringing them to Christ. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the keynote speakers. The event was attended by a large number of church leaders and scientists.
The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31, 1981. The meeting was covered extensively in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.
KACR started publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In CREATION, the organization published its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR as well as some books on creationism which were published outside of Korea. KACR members also gave talks in universities and churches across the country.
A KACR success was seen at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were fascinated by creationism that they raised money and got funding to construct a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also created branches in local offices that host seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.
Evolution in South Korea
In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt an increasingly Westernized lifestyle. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced with modern rock and roll and jazz. During this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the general public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as various musical instruments.
The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge facing the new regime lies in the proper balance between state-led economic policies as well as market-based ones. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.
Baekje, founded by Onjo Prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other areas as well as migrant workers from northern China. Baekje was an important regional power in the early 4th Century, expanded its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. Consequently, it came into frequent battle with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders along the border.
The fall of Silla in the 8th and early 9th centuries enabled powerful local factions to rise. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital and was in control of a portion of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was an adversary to Goguryeo.
However his rule was not long-lasting. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as an heir state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the central government system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
